Buda Castle
Crowning Castle Hill like a jewel in a tiara, Buda Castle stands as a testament to Hungary’s rich history and is a melting pot of architectural styles. Inside, the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum open their doors to curious explorers.
Hungarian Parliament
Sitting gracefully on the banks of the Danube, the Hungarian Parliament Building is a stunning sight to behold. Inside, the legendary crown jewels of King Stephen gleam with history. And that dome? At a staggering 97 metres high, it’s the cherry on top of this stunning architectural cake!
St. Stephen’s Basilica
Say cheese! Budapest’s favourite photo spot, St. Stephen’s Basilica, is a must-see monument dedicated to Hungary’s first king. This stunning tribute to Hungary’s first king is a sight to behold, with its grand architecture and lavish interior that’s dripping with intricate artwork.
One of the best things about travelling? The food, of course! Every destination has its own favourites – the dishes locals swear by and visitors can’t stop talking about. To make things easier, we’ve picked out four must-try treats from this region, with a little flavour of what they’re all about.
So… which one’s making your mouth water?
Svíčková na smetaně is one of the Czech Republic’s most beloved sauce-based dishes – and for good reason. Tender sirloin is slow cooked, then paired with a velvety sauce made from root vegetables, spices, and a splash of double cream. Served with dumplings to mop up every last drop, it’s the kind of meal that warms the soul.
Pierogi are delightful dumplings that are filled with everything from creamy potato and cheese to juicy berries or sweet fruits, then boiled or fried to golden perfection. Served with sour cream, butter, or a sprinkle of sugar – depending on the filling – they’re the undisputed icons of Poland’s kitchen.
In Hungary – where it’s a national dish – goulash is more like a hearty soup, brimming with tender meat, root vegetables, and seasoned generously with paprika for that signature kick. Cross the border into Austria, and you’ll find a thicker, richer version – more of a stew with a deep, gravy-like sauce.
Austria’s most iconic dessert, the Sachertorte, is a rich, chocolatey delight – but what sets it apart? Layers of dense, indulgent chocolate sponge, a spread of sweet apricot jam, and a glossy dark chocolate glaze – all served with a generous dollop of whipped cream.
